MUSIC FROM TAIWAN

When Western people were asked to play a music with Eastern tradition, there is always the vague impression as if it only constitutes 5 keys, and would be either fast simple rhythms, or tediously slow acoustics. However, I believe that this impression of Chinese music should now be overturned - there is just heaps more to Chinese music than ancient Japanese folk songs and Kitaro's electric piano! The essence of Chinese music is fairly similar to that of Irish tradition, it is not necessary seeking for perfection or complete intepretation, but pure enjoyment, where people gather together singing karaoke love songs, and folk dances during weekends and holidays. Here I will be introducing some of the famous love songs, and a special artist called Teresa Teng.

Tonight I want to be drunk - by Chen Chin Yi (鄭進一)
Black Dog - by Harlem Yu
Lady, Please Give Me Your Love
Lover - by Teresa Teng
I only Care About You - by Teresa Teng
"Forgetting Water" - by Andy Liu

I dont have time to explain all the astrophysics and chemistry of how Chinese music are orientated, I dont know them anyway. To my impression, the major uniqueness of the Chinese music is how most of them plays a role in capturing important past memories. I can always recall a lot of cheerful moments with these musics.

Pin Ji Graduation Day Song

Always Faithful ('Hope People Live Long') - by Teresa Teng
Let Yourself High - by Harlem
The Moon in the City - by Shi Chin Mei (許美靜-城裡的月光)

I dont often listen to Chinese vocal music nowadays. Not because it is lacking substance (since there are still very skilled musicians), but rather because of the musical arena becoming too widely commercial and competitive. 'Idoliatry' behaviours in many of the Asian countries has seemely redefined the musical essence as 'fast-food music' - either you produce the music on time, or else you wont catch up with the trend. The consequence of this is that the music becoming either all unique - trying to find the right music and the right target, and once that music became famous, you will not only expect this music to be less successful than expected (due to many pirated versions of the album), but also dozens of musicians all starting to follow your trend.

However, this kind of penetration has brought upon some very beautiful songs. There were hundreds of excellent and unique Chinese music that have been discovered after such an 'intense' battle.

I have exams coming up so I was always unable to complete this webpage for you... but hopefully once i find time I will introduce more on some of the excellent Chinese pop musicals.
